Waypoint Entertainment Launches Cweature Features, a New Genre Label Embracing the Playful Side of Horror

Waypoint Entertainment, the production company behind acclaimed films like The Favourite and Hostiles, has announced the launch of a new genre label called Cweature Features. Led by industry veterans Ken Kao and Josh Rosenbaum, the label aims to provide a collaborative sanctuary for filmmakers to create innovative and daring horror content, blending fear with fun and not taking itself too seriously.

Unleashing a New Era of Spooky Storytelling

Embracing the Quirky and the Creepy

The inspiration behind the Cweature Features label stems from a charming family moment. Ken Kao, the founder and president of both Waypoint Entertainment and Cweature Features, recalls how his young children would mispronounce "creature" as "cweature," with their teeth still coming in. This endearing quirk led Kao and his wife to realize that their little ones resembled "cweatures" themselves, evoking a sense of nostalgia for Kao's own childhood when his love for all things scary first began. Cweature Features aims to capture this playful spirit, embracing the idea that horror can be an experience that transcends age, blending thrills with a touch of whimsy.

Expanding the Boundaries of Horror

The launch of Cweature Features comes on the heels of Waypoint's recent success with the horror film Cuckoo, starring Hunter Schafer and Dan Stevens. This theatrical release has further ignited the team's passion for the genre, inspiring them to push the boundaries of what horror can be. Cweature Features will serve as a collaborative sanctuary for filmmakers, providing them with the expertise and resources to create innovative, auteur-driven horror content that challenges the status quo.

Riding the Wave of Horror's Commercial Triumph

The announcement of Cweature Features also coincides with Waypoint's new slate deal with Neon, which was forged after the companies collaborated on the release of Cuckoo. This partnership has already yielded impressive results, with Neon's acquisition of Osgood Perkins' Longlegs, which has become the studio's highest-grossing film to date, earning over million at the worldwide box office. The film's commercial success, surpassing expectations as a breakout horror hit, has further fueled Waypoint's enthusiasm for expanding its genre offerings.

Embracing the Dark Allure of Horror

Josh Rosenbaum, who serves as a partner and producer at both Cweature Features and Waypoint Entertainment, expresses the team's deep fascination with the horror genre. "The dark allure and possibilities within the horror genre have always been captivating," Rosenbaum says. "Our excitement led to Waypoint's desire to include Neon's acquisition of Longlegs as part of our slate deal. We're haunted by the idea of pushing the genre forward, aiming for an even crazier future of horror."

Waypoint's Impressive Genre Pedigree

Waypoint Entertainment, founded in 2010, has established itself as a production company with a strong genre pedigree. In addition to the recent success of Cuckoo and Longlegs, the company's impressive credits include Yorgos Lanthimos' Oscar and BAFTA-winning The Favourite, Shane Black's detective thriller The Nice Guys, and Martin Scorsese's Silence, among other acclaimed films. The launch of Cweature Features represents the next step in Waypoint's evolution, as the company seeks to further cement its position as a leading force in the horror and genre filmmaking landscape.

Unleashing the Next Wave of Terrifying Delights

With the establishment of Cweature Features, Waypoint Entertainment is poised to usher in a new era of spooky storytelling. By providing a collaborative platform for filmmakers to explore the darker corners of the human experience, the label aims to deliver a fresh and exhilarating take on the horror genre. As the team behind Cweature Features continues to push the boundaries of what's possible in the realm of fear and fun, audiences can look forward to a thrilling and unpredictable future of cinematic chills.
