Feeding the Community: WAFER Food Pantry Faces Unprecedented Demand

In the heart of La Crosse, Wisconsin, a local food pantry is facing a critical challenge – the demand for its services is outpacing its supply. WAFER Food Pantry, a vital resource for families in need, has recently relocated to a new facility, but the move has brought with it a surge in the number of individuals and households seeking assistance.

Bridging the Gap: WAFER's Vital Role in the Community

A Surge in Demand

The staff at WAFER Food Pantry have witnessed a significant increase in the number of families relying on their services. Erin Waldhart, the executive director, explains that the supply of many common items may run out in just three weeks, as the pantry struggles to keep up with the growing demand. This surge in demand could be attributed to the summer break, with more families turning to WAFER to fill the gap normally provided by school meals.

A Changing Landscape

The move to a brand-new facility on the corner of George and Gillette Streets, the former site of Gordy's Market, has brought both positives and challenges for WAFER. While the new location has provided a more spacious and modern setting, the increased visibility has also led to a surge in the number of individuals seeking assistance.

Straining Resources

Waldhart acknowledges that WAFER is now being stretched like never before, as they work tirelessly to meet the growing demand for their services. The organization serves food packages to approximately 1,500 families per month, which equates to around 3,500 people. With the approaching back-to-school season, Waldhart anticipates that families will need to allocate resources towards school supplies and other necessary items, further straining their ability to meet their food needs.

Urgent Need for Support

WAFER is now in an urgent need for food collections and financial donations to keep up with the service demand. The pantry is low on essential items such as peanut butter, macaroni and cheese, canned soups and crackers, breakfast items, canned meat, and pasta. Waldhart emphasizes the importance of the community's response, stating, "Our community has always responded when we have asked. Our new building is a testament to that. However, we are now at a point where we are concerned about our ability to help keep many members of our community from going hungry."

Answering the Call

To address the urgent need, WAFER is calling on the community to step up and support their efforts. Monetary donations can be made online or by mail, while food donations can be dropped off during the pantry's open hours. Waldhart and her team are hopeful that the community will once again rally to support their mission of providing food security to those in need.As the summer winds down and the back-to-school season approaches, the demand on WAFER Food Pantry is only expected to grow. With the community's support, the pantry can continue to be a beacon of hope and a vital resource for families in La Crosse, ensuring that no one goes hungry.
